Dog trainers, especially those who are just starting out in their careers, are increasingly claiming that pups and even adult dogs suffer from separation anxiety, much like people.

Take note, though, that actual separation anxiety is distinct from a dog who follows you about the house, keeps up a frantic pace when you reach for the vehicle keys, scratches a few cushions while you're out, and then settles down.

A more appropriate description would be a dog who works feverishly or who bloodies his paws from scratching at the door in an attempt to escape and locate you, or who digs at his kennel until his paws are swollen and red.

It is this dog who whines, howls, bays, or woofs excessively and makes excessive noises throughout your absence, causing you to hyperventilate.
