Clarios, which manufactures one in every three automobile batteries worldwide, is expanding its research facility in Hanover. A cold chamber was recently added to the well-equipped automotive laboratory. Two automobiles can be cooled to -40 °C here to test the capacity limits of new and old car batteries. The goal is to investigate and improve the batteries' starting effect and start/stop function in extreme cold.

Clarios' vehicle laboratory and new cold chamber are part of the company's development department and are utilized for product development. The cold tests are primarily concerned with determining how the battery interacts with the electronics throughout the car, regardless of whether it is driven by a combustion engine or by electricity. In fully electric vehicles, a 12-volt battery is also a crucial component. The high-voltage battery powers the driveline, while a 12V battery from Clarios' xEV portfolio powers the car's internal electrical system, which includes critical safety features.

Clarios' battery testing capabilities can also suit OEM clients' wishes and requirements. For example, it could be to investigate the battery's performance in a particular car when the engine is started throughout the vehicle's life. Artificially aged batteries are utilized for this. Depending on the user profile, several life cycles and long and short excursions can be recreated—these extensive tests to determine the battery's full capacity aid in ensuring the optimal battery selection.

The cold chamber and wire system laboratory is not only additions to the Hannover plant. Clarios' global network and research and development centers work together closely to support development initiatives in Europe, the United States, and China. Employees investigate how the battery reacts under a variety of scenarios. Measurements are frequently taken on-site under realistic settings and can last for several years.

According to Markus Hoh, head of Clarios' automotive laboratory in Hannover: "We consider ourselves to be more than just a manufacturer. As a provider of technological solutions and information, we also wish to support and advise our customers actively."

The close proximity of the development department and the test laboratory allows for considerable synergy. New research findings can be swiftly applied to boost product development and our customers. As a result of the improved product quality, both car makers and end customers are more satisfied.

"We obtain early information on significant developments in the next years through close collaboration with vehicle manufacturers worldwide. We can then transfer that expertise to our aftermarket clients, assisting them in improving and preparing their workshops for the future," Markus Hoh adds.
