One of the first things we were going to do when we moved into a new house was invested enough money to make sure everything was safe. The inspector who checked out our house said that the chimney itself had a lot of ash and soot in it. Additionally, he informed us that this may indicate a more serious buildup of creosote residue. This is the residue that remains after burning wood, and when vapors of this substance travel up a chimney's interior, some of them get stuck there as well.
